In Short
The BUFFALO LinkStation 720 16TB offers a straightforward, subscription-free path to centralized network storage. It is an ideal choice for users who want secure, automated backups and remote access without the complexities of third-party apps or recurring monthly cloud fees.
Our Review
The BUFFALO LinkStation 720 is designed for users who need a centralized home office storage solution that emphasizes security and simplicity. By functioning as a private cloud, it allows you to store, manage, and access your media and documents across multiple computers without relying on expensive monthly subscriptions. It connects directly to your router, making it a hassle-free addition to your existing network infrastructure.
While it excels in data protection with its closed system architecture and SSL encryption, it lacks the broader application ecosystem found in more advanced consumer NAS devices. This creates a trade-off where you gain a focused, secure storage environment at the cost of the flexibility to install many third-party utilities. It is a solid, purpose-built machine for those prioritizing data safety and ease of use over advanced tinkering.
Standout Features
The standout aspect of the LinkStation 720 is its commitment to security and simplicity, featuring a closed-system design that minimizes vulnerabilities. Its hybrid cloud integration with services like Dropbox, Azure, and OneDrive adds a layer of versatility, allowing for easy data synchronization alongside local backups.
What We Like
We appreciate the inclusion of hard drives right out of the box, which simplifies the setup process significantly. The combination of RAID configuration options, 24/7 US-based support, and a two-year warranty provides peace of mind for users who want a 'set it and forget it' data storage solution.
